Sociological Theory

Assignment: Journal or Magazine Article Analysis

This assignment involves writing a short paper in which you analyze a journal or magazine article about a “social problem” using sociological concepts and theories. The article should have a publication date of 2007. Your paper should detail the way that the social problem is presented and critique the solutions offered (or not offered). It is expected that students will use one of the sociological theories discussed in class and demonstrate an ability to apply the theory, not just repeat theoretical concepts.

Sociological Theory Research Topics

Please make sure your Sociological Concept Research Paper include the following items:

  1. A brief summary of the article. One or two paragraphs. Use your fine creative writing skills. Do not say, “This article was about…….” Instead, use something like “The Shape of Thighs to Come” an article from the August issue of Vanity Fair shows how ideal body images of both men and women changes over time. By showing the fluidity of ideal body images, the article presents a symbolic interactionist perspective to gender issues.
  2. A discussion of how the “social problem” was defined in the article. Please use specific sociological concepts and theories. You may also use direct quotes from the article but I expect correct citations.
  3. A summary paragraph of whether or not you liked the article. Did you think it was particularly sociological? Do you think that the message that the article sends to the reader is a good one? Why or why not?

You need to submit to me the article title you are reviewing. The magazine should be specified as well. Please have someone edit your paper before submission. Handwritten papers will not be accepted.
