The period of the 1960s and 1970s was a special and interesting time in the history of America.  People were beginning to realize the potential they possessed and how it could effect the world around them.  The need to rise up in protest over things that seemed out of their control, presented itself in many different forms.  Whether through the fight for racial integration or more power for students in universities, the air was prime for the battle of equality.

The following books are excellent examples of books to use when examining the history of the 1960s and 1970s:Sixties and Seventies

  1. “My Soul Is Rested” by Howell Raines
  2. “Vietnam Wars” by Marilyn Young
  3. “Democracy in the Streets” by James Miller

In each book the author expresses views and theories of particular issues of interest, that arose during this time of social and cultural change.  These particular literary works offer an insight into the period of struggle in America, for people to have more of a say in the decisions, that up until this point, governed their society.  It can easily be said that it was a time for personal assertion, and the breaking of traditional judgment on many issues.  The three books listed touch on three different topics of social injustice during the 1960s and 1970s, racial segregation, the Vietnam War, and participatory democracy.  All three issues amassed tremendous public outcry during the course of these two decades and ultimately affected the vast majority of American citizens.

James Miller wrote “Democracy in the Streets” in protest to the disengagement of the American people from the American philosophy of democracy, due to the disgust over the control of government in the hands of representatives that did not sufficiently represent the people of America.
