Nearly all educators understand the value of identifying a student’s learning style; doing so will enable instructors to craft lesson plans and projects that work with their students’ strengths and help them to develop their weaknesses. Determining a student’s learning style can be relatively simple when they reach higher grades; they can evaluate their own progress themselves and make a subsequent determination. However, when working with elementary school students, this identification can be very difficult, as they do not possess the objectivity to effectively evaluate themselves.
If instructors keep the questions relatively simple, however, it is not impossible for a learning style inventory to be taken. Asking students how they feel when doing independent reading or what they do if they are unsure of how to spell a word and giving them three simple answers to choose from can be reflective of their learning style. If they answer the former with “I read the words out loud or try to hear them inside my head,” it is more than likely they are an auditory learner. If they answer the latter with “I write it many times until it looks right,” they are more than likely going to identify as a visual learner. By keeping the answer options relatively straightforward and easy to understand, instructors and students alike can get an accurate assessment of what type of learning style they possess. Subsequently, educators can work with this knowledge to provide students the best possible opportunities for academic success.
