In 1978, BBC Radio 4, a British spoken-word radio station, began broadcasting a science fiction comedy series known as “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The series, based upon the writing of Douglas Adams, a British satirist who began his career on Monty Python’s Flying Circus, drastically grew in popularity and was subsequently developed into a series of highly successful novels, the first of which was published in 1979.

Upon his death in 2001, Adams was developing a sixth and final addition to ever-expanding trilogy known as the Guide. In addition to these novels, the Guide was also adapted to a series of six television episodes in 1981, theatrical performances between 1979 and 1983, and, more recently, a cinematic production, developed by Touchstone Pictures, that was released as a science fiction film in 2005. Additionally, the Guide has been developed into numerous non-traditional media formats such as video games and comic books. THGTG follows the various misadventures of Arthur Dent as he explores the Universe following the destruction of Earth. The series title is taken from Dent’s unnamed companion, an alien from the Betelguse system who meets Dent while he is performing research on Earth to develop his travel guide for the Milky Way galaxy. Adams is said to have developed the concept and title for the series while hitchhiking across Europe during the early 1960s.
