George Bush's Biography
George W. Bush was raised in Midland, Texas. His father was a career politician who served as Vice President under Ronald Reagan and was elected to a single term from 1989 to 1993. The younger Bush attended Yale University and served in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. As a young man, George W. Bush’s life was characterized by problems with alcohol, before becoming sober in 1986. After serving in a number of executive positions in Texas energy companies, Bush became a part owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team from 1989 to 1998.

In 1994, Bush ran for governor of Texas. Among his first acts as governor was allowing Texans to carry concealed weapons and slashing taxes by $2 billion. In 2000, he ran for president against Vice President Al Gore. A close race in Florida led to a recount, which was halted by the US Supreme Court, making Bush president. Re-elected in 2004, much of Bush’s administration was occupied by his invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush was also criticized for his seeming lack of response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
