Arthritis is an inflammation of the body’s joints. There are more than 100 different type of arthritis, the most common being osteoarthritis, which accompanies aging. Rheumatoid arthritis is a more serious, chronic inflammatory disorder, and onsets during middle age. Foods that Cause InflammationWhat many people may not realize is that, because the body is already in an inflammatory state, arthritis can be exacerbated by certain foods.

The Arthritis Foundation lists several foods that may trigger further inflammation in the body. The main foods that do this are:

  1. Sugar
  2. Saturated fats
  3. Excess consumption of Omega 6 fatty acids

The first is sugar. Processed sugars release cytokines into the body, which can cause inflammations. Substituting aspartame for sugar is inadvisable, however, as it too can trigger inflammation.

Saturated fats are number two on the list. Two of the largest sources of saturated fat in the American diet, which people with arthritis should avoid, are pizza and cheese. Meat, full-fat dairy products, and pasta are also notorious sources of saturated fats. Trans fats, often found in fast food, are also known for triggering inflammations.

Excess consumption of Omega 6 fatty acids may cause the body to produce inflammation. Omega 6, unfortunately, is essential to the body’s normal growth and development, but its consumption should be moderate. Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, stimulate inflammation in the body, as does MSG. Finally, people suffering from arthritis should consider eliminating alcohol, as it weakens the liver and may also cause inflammations.
