Throughout the history of civilization, individuals have stood before groups and delivered orations, known as speeches. Many of these speeches have become famous, recorded by history and occasionally marked by memorable phrases. “Give me liberty, or give me death,” is a well-known phase from a speech delivered by Patrick Henry in 1775.
Famous Speeches Through Out Time
Famous speeches have been recorded since the dawn of civilization. In 431 BCE, the Greek leader Pericles delivered a speech during the Peloponnesian War, known as the Funeral Oration. The speech is included in Thucydides’ history of the war, but historians are unsure exactly how much is Pericles’ actual words.
In 1095, Pope Urban II gave a famous speech at the Council of Clermont in France, which inaugurated the Crusades. This speech, also recorded by a historian, changed much of the course of European history throughout the Middle Ages, and the Crusades have affected Christian/Muslim relations ever since.
A very brief, but powerful famous speech is that of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Few Americans do not recognize the opening phrase, “Four score and seven years ago.” Lincoln was commemorating the opening of the cemetery at Gettysburg and his brief speech was immediately recognized for the power of its words. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 is perhaps the most famous and uplifting speech of the 20th century.
