Company benefits vary widely from company to company and from industry to industry. The latter part of the 20th century saw the use of new benefits by employers in response to the continued increas of women in the workplace. Because many households have both parents working, some new benefits have tended to be more family-friendly. For example, many employers offer some form of flexible employee hours to help accommodate family needs. Also, the Family Medical Leave Act was passed in the 1990s, which forced businesses with more than 50 employees to allow employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid absence per year to take care of a baby or to deal with a serious illness. Another new benefit combines sick leave and vacation time into one grouping called paid leave banks. This is another way in which flexibility has been added to employee benefits.
