William Daley was born on August 9th, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to entering a career of politics, Daley was a prominent lawyer and business executive. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Daley was the vice chairman, president, and COO of the Amalgamated Bank of Chicago. Throughout the 1990’s, Daley was appointed as an active board member of Fannie Mae. It was also during this time that he began entering into the field of politics. In 1993, Daley was appointed by President Clinton as a special consultant for the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA. In 1997, Daley also assumed the position of Secretary of Commerce under the Clinton Administration.
The 2000’s were a busy decade for Daley from both a business and political standpoint. From 2001 to 2004, Daley served as the president of SBC Communications, served as the Midwest Chairperson for J.P Morgan Chase and Bank One, and also served as a board member for Boeing and Merck. The political side of his career consisted of being the vice president of Al Gore’s Presidential campaign, being an active supporter of the Obama Presidential campaign, and being appointed as a member of the of the Obama-Biden Transition project during the 2000’s. Today, Daley’s career is mainly focused on politics. On January 6, 2011 he was designated to become President Obama’s new White House Chief of Staff. Although much controversy has surrounded this designation, it is assumed that Daley will be confirmed and assume his position in late January or February of 2011.
