Anthropology is the study of human beings and their ways of living from a biocultural perspective. There are four major sub-disciplines of anthropology: 1) physical or biological anthropology, 2) archaeology, 3) cultural or sociocultural anthropology, and 4) anthropological linguistics. Applied anthropology is the practical application of anthropological principles, theories, and methodologies to solve contemporary problems.
What is Anthropology?
The Holistic Approach is the practice of integrating these four main fields of anthropology. Holism is the notion that any study of humans should take into account all aspects of their existence. Thus kinship, genetics, demography, and biological reproduction are linked. Likewise, history, ethnicity, identity, migration patterns, and archaeology are often inseparable. All together, these features contribute to both the paradigm and distinctiveness of anthropology, making it different from other scientific endeavors. It is human beings and the human experience that link the four sub-disciplines together.
A key concept in Cultural Anthropology is Culture. Every society has a distinctive culture, which is unique in its view of the world, rules of moral conduct and patterns of social interactions. Culture has been defined in an infinite number of ways. The ultimate goal of anthropology is to find a fully encompassing and functional definition that separates culture from other closely related terms such as society.
A Society is a group of people of a given location that share the same cultural traditions. A society can be comprised of people of varied backgrounds and cultural persuasions, who share the common goal of surviving together. A broader term is social structure. This is the relationship that holds the society together. The society can be comprised of a variety of different culture groups; a concept referred to as subcultural variation. The subcultural variation is a distinctive set of standards and behavior patterns by which a group within a larger society operates. In a society where there are a large number of subcultural patterns, the society is called pluralistic. It is important to understand the difference between society and culture when approaching anthropology.
