While the idea of lupus is in itself a frightening reality, researchers have found that there are three distinct class of lupus that currently exist: discoid, systemic, and drug-induced.  According to an author discoid lupus is best recognized by a rash that appears on the face, neck and scalp.  Discoid lupus is diagnosed through a biopsy of the rash and typically does not involve all of the organs in the body (systemic lupus).  In ten percent of all discoid lupus cases, systemic lupus arises regardless of treatment modalities utilized.

Systemic lupus is the most sever form of lupus.  In this condition, any and all organs in the body can be targeted for autoimmune response.  For instance, in some individuals the joints and lungs will be affected while in others the kidneys and heart will be affected.  No two individuals have the same symptoms or progression of the disease.  Systemic lupus, like cancer can follow patterns of remission—i.e. the patient is asymptomatic—and flare—i.e. when symptoms begin suddenly. 

The symptoms of drug induced lupus are similar to those of systemic lupus; however, drug induced lupus occurs after the ingestion of certain combinations of drugs.  “The drugs most commonly connected with drug-induced lupus are hydralazine (used treat high blood pressure or hypertension) and procainamide (used to treat irregular heart rhythms)” (What is).  Of the total number of individuals that takes these drugs, four percent will develop symptoms of lupus.  Of this four percent only a small percentage will actually develop drug-induced lupus.
