The movie A Thousand Acres, based on the Pulitzer-prize winning book novel by Jane Smiley and starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Robards and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, tells the story of an older revered member of a farming community who decides to retire and leave his accumulated farm with all its assets to his three daughters.  Sibling rivalry ensues, as sisters sleep with the same men, and the question of the father’s true character; the amount of loyalty owed to one’s family, are all aspects of human motivation explored in this film.

The Jason Robards character is reveled in the course of the film to be a child rapist, causing child abuse to two and maybe all three of his daughters.  Therefore, he is not the true ‘pillar’ of the community that he is thought to be.  The two eldest daughters, played by Lange and Pfeiffer, do not reveal the facts about their father’s crimes, however, maintaining their loyalty to their father. Then turmoil results after the father gives the land to his daughters and their respective families.  The youngest daughter, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, wants no part of the deal.  She helps her father pursue the matter legally to get the land and farm back in his possession.  In order to do so, they set out to show that the sisters are not doing a good job of maintaining the farm.  This is when the motivation of the characters truly becomes apparent during the course of the trial.
