The inhumane practice of slavery began in the American colonies in 1619. Although Africans first came to the New World around 1501, the early colonists did not think to use them as slave labor. Instead, they imported poor, white indentured servants from Europe to clear forests and cultivate fields. The white servants indentured themselves to pay for their passage to the new world. It is estimated that half of all white men that came to the colonies came as bondsmen.

It was the English colonists that incited the idea of using Black slaves. They could be caught easily because of their color and they could be bought and kept until they died.  "Negroes, from a pagan land and without exposure to the ethical ideals of Christianity, could be handled with more rigid methods of discipline and could be morally and spiritually degraded for the sake of stability on the plantation," wrote historian John Hope Franklin in "From Slavery to Freedom".

In the new land of America, the English were desperate for cheap labor. It was difficult to convince whites to cross the ocean to be indentured labor.  Indians were not productive workers because they often died from European-transmitted diseases and knowledge of the countryside enabled them to escape more easily. Additionally, the English custom was to enslave only non-Christians. Thus, Africans who were non-Christian and ignorant of the local geography seemed to be ideal servants.

As Africans became aware of the English settlers’ reluctance to enslave Christians, they began to convert in order to gain their freedom. So in 1667, Virginia passed a law that Christians could also be slaves. Later in 1670, a law was passed that indicated that any non-Christian arriving by ship would spend the rest of his or her life as a slave.
