While a few from a survey of American Romantic Era writers produced literature that may be placed within a single genre, most of them wrote across two or more genres during their lives. Of those whose works may be generally placed within one genre are the poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), the Romantic novelist James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), and the gothic novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864).

With the exception of letters of correspondence, all of Emily Dickinson’s published works are in the form of poetry. Neither nor transcendental, Dickinson is simply a poet American Romantic era. Romantic write James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans is representative of the way Cooper’s novels focused upon the Romantic theme of nature in its celebration of the American wilderness. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novels, such as The Scarlet Letter, and The House of the Seven Gables, are representative of American gothic melodrama.  Of Romantic-era American writers whose works spanned two genres are the gothic short-story writer and poet Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849), and the poet and political commentator Walt Whitman (1819-1892).

Edgar Allen Poe’s works are, to many, the epitome of gothic writing. In Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, is found a strong gothic sense of desolation with “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day...” On the other hand, Poe also wrote gothic-style poetry, with The Raven being among his best known. Though Walt Whitman was born and lived after most well known transcendentalist, much his poetry embodied true transcendental thought. In Song of Myself, Whitman seeks to relate his soul to the universe. For example, in line 1285 of Song of Myself Whitman says “In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass”. Historical events, such as the Civil War, also influenced Whitman to write non-transcendental poems such as his collection known as Drum Taps. Other writers of the American Romantic era wrote across several genres. These writers include the transcendental essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), whose essays were both transcendental and politically inspired, Herman Melville (1891-1891), whose works may be seen as both a political commentary and transcendental, and the poet and Romantic Henry W. Longfellow (1807-1882).
