Psychology of Blackness, also referred to as Black psychology, is a psychological perspective that tries to include the unique worldview of African-Americans. Many researchers have asserted that African descendents have a worldview that is radically different from Americans of European descent. According to Maulana Karenga, an important activist and scholar of African-American studies, there are three types of Black psychology: traditional, reformist, and radical. The motivation of traditional psychology of Blackness is to better understand the behavior of African-Americans through the context of European norms. The reformist approach attempts to fit the African-American experience into a conventional framework without considering the impact of African cultural foundations. A radical psychology of Blackness analyzes Black behavior without referencing the influence of the European worldview, thus creating a unique psychological perspective that applies to African-Americans.
