Requirements for Porter's Five Forces and Computer Technology Research Paper:

  • Customers.
    1. Who are they?
    2. Which customer segments are the most desirable? Is this changing?
    3. What do customers value?
    4. Apply the factors from Porter’s discussion of Buyer Power (such as concentration, switching costs, differentiation) that are pertinent to your industry.
    5. Provide specific data and numbers to substantiate claims whenever possible, since claims backed up by figures are always more persuasive and illustrative than vague impressions (for example, consider the difference between saying “most music listeners are kids” versus providing the statistic from the Recording Industry Association that shows that 2/3rds of industry revenues have historically been derived from 12-24 year-olds). This is generally one of the easiest of the factors to get data on.
  • Suppliers.
    1. Who are they?
    2. How powerful are they?
    3. Do they affect industry dynamics?
    4. Apply the factors from Porter’s discussion of Supplier Power (such as concentration, substitutes, switching costs, differentiation, forward integration) that are pertinent to your industry. Provide specific data and numbers to substantiate claims whenever possible.
  • Substitutes.
    1. What are the substitute products for your industry?
    2. How much do they impact the sales or competitive conditions of your industry?
    3. To what extent do substitutes explain some of the recent industry trends?
    4. Provide specific data and numbers to substantiate claims whenever possible.
  • New Entrants.
    1. Are there any new entrants (usually firms from industries outside the traditional boundaries of the industry) in your industry?
    2. Who are they?
    3. How much of a threat do they pose?
    4. How do you know?
    5. Apply the factors from Porter’s discussion of New Entrants/Exit Barriers (such as scale economies, differentiation, capital requirements, learning effects) that are pertinent to your industry.
    6. Provide specific data and numbers to substantiate claims whenever possible.
  • Rivalry.
    1. How fierce is rivalry in this industry?
    2. What’s the proof?
    3. What’s been going on with pricing? Or perhaps certain basic expenditures, the way R&D would be for high-tech firms?
    4. What’s happened to profitability?
    5. Apply the factors from Porter’s discussion of Rivalry (such as market growth, fixed costs, exist barriers, fragmentation of competitors that are pertinent to your industry. Provide specific data and numbers to substantiate claims whenever possible. This is usually an easy factor to get data on.
  • Please note that not all 5 Forces will be important in each industry. The industry analysis should emphasize the force(s) that are most pertinent to the team’s chosen industry. If a force is unimportant, however, please just briefly (a paragraph or so) explain why. Again, the discussion of the 5 Forces will be significantly more persuasive and informative if characterizations of each Force are accompanied by illustrative data and facts, rather than just impressionistic claims.
