Any poker aficionado cannot help but notice the proliferation of twenty-somethings invading the poker scene. Even casual viewers of World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour programming would agree that not only are poker players becoming younger but also better. Gone are the days, for many, of endless studying and taking “useless” classes to secure a degree in favor of fame and fortune on the poker scene.

While natural ability does play a role in the potential success of these young players, this increased adeptness is more likely due to the availability of online poker sites and the opportunities for increasing one’s knowledge base. When faced with the alternative of years of study to procure a traditional job and the possibilities of glitz, glamour, and enormous riches, it is not surprising that many choose the latter. If college students, especially good ones, invest the same amount of time learning the nuances of poker by reading, watching, and playing as they do studying and attending class then it is not unreasonable to believe that some degree of achievement can be had.

Of course, becoming successful in any field, even poker, requires expanding one’s knowledge base. The plethora of books available by extremely successful poker players offers yet another dimension to expanding said knowledge. Furthermore, actually playing alongside these professionals in local cash games or tournaments expands upon this dimension and provides a virtually unmatched wealth of information.
