There, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you.”

Some scholars and historians have proposed several solutions to the problem of credibility: some have postulated that the Gospel writers all had access to an earlier Gospel, now lost; some thought that the oral tradition had become so stereotyped that it provided a common source from which all the Gospel writes drew; and the most commonly held view is that the Gospel of Mark and a hypothetical document, called Quelle (German for “source”) or Q, were used by Matthew and Luke as sources for most of the materials included in their Gospels.
