Originally, the Dominican Republic was inhabited by native peoples that were relatives of indigenous peoples of the Americas.  In terms of the modern history of the Dominican Republic, the first known European explorer to visit what is the modern-day Dominican Republic was Christopher Columbus in 1492.  The Spanish quickly followed the early visitation by Columbus with exploration of their own and established the Dominican Republic as a Spanish colony known as Hispaniola that also included its neighbor Haiti.  In 1697, Hispaniola was divided into two with Spain retaining the Dominican Republic .  During the centuries that followed, the Dominican Republic was taken over by Haiti on several occasions until 1844 when the Dominican Republic gained its independence from Haiti . A variety of governments, most of which were not representative, followed in the years after 1844 until 1996 when the Dominican Republic finally elected its own government for the first time through a free election by its people despite the fact that the country drafted a new constitution in 1966 .

The Dominican Republic is currently a country with an estimated population around 8.4 million as of July 2000 .  16% of the population is white, 11% is black, and the remainder is mixed Spanish and Indian descent .  The national language is Spanish and the vast majority, 95%, of the people's religion is Roman Catholic .

As noted above, the Dominican Republic is now a representative democracy comprised of 29 provinces and one district.  The chief of state for the country is the president.  Leonel FERNANDEZ Reyna has held this position since 1996 .

In terms of the Dominican Republic's economy, the primary industries are tourism, sugar processing, mining, textiles, cement, and tobacco .  The country's major exports are ferronickel, sugar, gold, silver, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, and meats and the major imports are foodstuffs, petroleum, cotton, fabrics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals .

Below is a map that shows the general geography of the Dominican Republic as well as its location with respect to Central and North America and the Caribbean.  The country covers 18,699 square miles (48,442 square kilometers) and covers about two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola .  As seen in this figure Costa Rica is bordered by only one neighbor, Haiti, to the west and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea on all other sides .  The capital city of Santo Domingo is located south-centrally along the southern coast of the country.
