Medically, cerebral infarction is defined as “an area of the brain in which the blood flow has fallen below the critical level necessary to maintain tissue viability”.  In the case of cerebral infarction, if blood supply is not restored to the site of blockage within minutes, the affected brain tissue dies (or becomes infracted).  In most cases the cause of infarction is not known (either embolism or thrombosis) but medical researchers have identified a number of factors that can contribute to the occurrence of the condition:

• Thickening of the blood due to an increase in red blood cells
• Cholesterol and fatty deposits in the artery (atherosclerosis).
• Inflammation of the arteries (arteritis) and veins (phlebitis).
