Breakfast at Tiffany’s
The novel, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, is not the light-hearted story that was portrayed in the film version of the novel that was released in 1961. On the contrary, while much of the plot is preserved in the film, the novel includes much darker aspects of its characters, including those of Holly Golightly. The reader will ultimately find out that Holly Golightly was from Tulip Texas where, along with her brother Fred, was forced to live with a cruel foster family after the deaths of their parents. In order to escape her cruel environment, fourteen year-old Holly, whose real name was Lulamae Barnes, married Doc Golightly, but quickly became disenchanted with married life and ran off to New York. The novel begins with the narrator’s recollection of Holly, who had been his neighbor and friend in New York more than a decade earlier. Much of the novel is occupied with the narrator’s observation of Holly as she carries on with her somewhat random and mysterious life. Her young age and diminutive stature belied the fact that she associated with oddball characters like Mag Wildwood and Rusty Trawler and with notorious characters like Sally Tomato and his crooked lawyer O’Shaughnessey. Holly attempts to turn from her wild ways and become a wife and mother but her plans are thwarted when she is arrested for connections to Sally Tomato. The last time the narrator sees her, she is driving off in a taxi and escaping to Brazil.
