Time Management for College Students

Time Management for College StudentArguably the most critical skill in adapting to college life and the real world is the ability to budget time. It seems like there is an abundance of it until midterms come up and you realize that you’ve only read halfway through the first chapter of one text. College is far more academically intense than high school. Your high school teacher was probably satisfied if you stuck in a stray reference to the actual topic. College instructors, however, tend to pick your term paper apart and dissect it like a frog. Since academic excellence was the ostensive reason for going to college, you have to do your best to attain it. But this takes time, because every professor thinks her or his class is the most important, and assigns accordingly. Learn how to manage your time effectively with these simple suggestions.

On the other hand, many other aspects of college life require attention as well, and they are arguably about as important. If you’re paying for school with an athletic scholarship, for example, then that’s necessary too, and it takes up time. Friends, and late-night bull sessions aren’t the least bit important to your grades, but they are essential to your education. The key to success is not to sacrifice what you need psychologically for your immediate pressures. Get help with your coursework from tutors, writing labs term paper services , and study groups.

If you’re living at home, your parents will most likely help you (ahem!) budget your time. If you’re on-campus, the easiest way to manage time is to buy or make a schedule calendar and hang it on the wall next to your bed. Start off slowly with extra-curricular activities, say one — two at the most — and then block them out on the schedule in one color. Block out class time with another. Schedule one to two hours for every hour of instruction, and block that out in a third color. Block out between five and eight hours every day for sleep, and two and a half for meals. Everything else is your time. Enjoy it.

You might be able to do the same thing in you’re head if you’re too cheap to buy one, or too lazy to make your own. But just the activity of doing it will impress upon you what little time you actually have. If mom and dad aren’t managing your affairs and telling you when to do this or that, it will come in handy. Besides, after a couple of weeks, you’ll no longer have to look at the calendar. It’ll become second nature.
