Term Papers in Marketable Degree Fields

A recent article in MSN Encarta listed the 5 most marketable degrees in the year 2009. The degrees that are highly marketable for college students today are as follows: Nursing, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics and Education. In a four part series, we will examine each of these fields and common issues addressed in writing term papers for each unique degree area. Today, we begin with the extremely equitable and marketable career choice of Nursing.

In the past two decades, reflective nursing practices such as term paper writing and research reports have moved to the forefront of professional nursing research and analysis. Studies site the increased acuity levels of patients, decreases in the length of hospitalization and the proliferation of health care technology and specialization as driving forces behind the need for highly educated nurses. On the other hand, other studies speak about the ever-changing demands of health care delivery that require practitioners who are able to utilize their knowledge to meet patient needs in a flexible and creative manner. Term papers are part of a reflective nursing practice that is required to develop the type of practitioner that is able to function effectively in today’s health care system.

Hence, reflection in term papers has become an important issue for the nursing profession and nursing education. Nurse practisioners who have skills in term paper writing are believed to have the intellectual capacity to formulate knowledge allowing them to better serve and care for their clients; offer and provide critically thoughtful approaches to nursing care in complex environments; and link theory to practice, which in turn, fosters an understanding of nursing.

In addition to the demand for nurse practitioners who are skilled in writing in the workplace, there has been a significant movement in nursing education away from teacher–centered learning toward a more learner-focused paradigm. Nursing education has experienced a significant shift in its approach to teaching. Within the last ten years, nursing curriculum has moved away from traditional didactic and positivist empirical approach to a more qualitative methodology based on questioning, critical inquiry, emancipatory philosophy and critical social theory. As a result of the demand for reflective practice and the change in nursing curricula, term paper writing has become a popularized pedagogical strategy used in nursing education.

Finding and developing methods that provide learners with the opportunity to reflect on their education through term paper writing has become an important consideration for nurse educators. Term paper writing is one such strategy that is believed to provide a format that promotes reflection and reflective practice in nurse learners. Therefore, term paper writing has become a significant part of nursing curriculum as a teaching and learning tool.
