If only...Romeo and Juliet and Text Messaging

Back in the industrial revolution, technology got a bad rap. Think of the film Metropolis and Fritz Lang’s depiction of the future of industrial labor under the strong arm of technology. However, today’s college students can hardly scoff at technology, as it drives their lives in nearly every aspect. Journalism classes at Purdue University require Twitter accounts; New software called Hotseat allows students to ask questions live, during class via their facebook, twitter, myspace or sms accounts. Think of the limitless possibilities of social media technology in light of past predicaments. If only Juliet had text messaging, that whole “I just committed suicide” misunderstanding could have been avoided. I can see it now…Juliet texts Romeo “brb…taking fake poison…napping, catch you later in tomb”. Easy as that, no communication problems. Think about Twitter and the Holocaust…”Hitler’s an ass…I don’t buy a word of his crap”. “Germany is killing Jews, wtf are they thinking!”. Or how about the fall of man:

Eve: Hey Adam, thinking of taking a bite…opinion?

Adam: OMG!!! He will be so pissed!

Eve: No, check out @Satan, he’s got great ideas. #EatTheApple

Adam: He friended me last week but I blocked him. Don’t trust him.

Eve: He’s legit; he’s got a LinkdIn page. Gabe is on it.

So if social media could have saved Romeo and Juliet and the whole world could have known about the Holocaust, couldn’t the technology we embrace today help us make the world a better place? Absolutely and it’s starting in the college classrooms with innovative educational uses. College students need to embrace the technology available and participate fully in the advantage that tools like Twitter and Facebook can bring to the classroom. Encourage professor’s to use new technologies and integrate them into the day to day lectures, lessons and tests.

Netbooks have received a vast amount of criticism over the past year but one area that they excel in without debate is for use in the educational setting. Cheap, compact and powerful enough for student applications like word and the internet, netbooks seem tailored for college students.

While cheap generally is connotative with “sacrifice what you really need”, I find this not to be the case. I work weekends on a netbook from a hotel room and not once have I ever run into a situation that I felt a lack of memory, power or screen space. I even do web development on my Toshiba NB205, and find the 10″ screen just fine for seeing the big picture.

For college students, netbooks are perfect. They fit well on small desks in large lecture halls. And speaking of small spaces, they are great for dorm rooms and having on your lap as you work on your bed, the one piece of furniture that you’re given, other than a rock hard desk chair. If you have the room in your dorm room, put in a 21″ monitor and just plug the laptop into when you’re stationary. Then you have all the benefits of a desktop system and a big screen for YouTube Videos! They also fit great in a backpack, something that a 17inch screen doesn’t really. I know I used to hate lugging my laptop and a separate back pack to the library. In fact, I’m relatively sure that is how I injured my shoulders, not 4 years of pitching softball.

And finally, the best part of netbooks for the college student…Price! At $350, yeah, it’s not going to last long but then you can get 2 netbooks for the price of one regular laptop and I would rather have the most up to date technology every two years than a bloated, hard to carry, overpriced full laptop that doesn’t fit the college lifestyle.

From Penn State to Georgia State, students are protesting the use of coal-based fuel, some of which produces the majority of power on campus.

College students are in a very powerful place in their lives to make change on a grand scale. The 18 to twenty-somethings are grouped together, educated and generally open to looking at the world in a new light, as they are recently freed from the influence of their parents. We encourage the college students we work with to become involved in active in the educational process beyond the classroom, that is, what is going on socially with their peers. Social change can happen on a grand scale, beginning with the college campus. Take the example of protests going on all over campuses over the use of coal. From Penn State to Georgia State, students are protesting the use of coal-based fuel, some of which produces the majority of power on campus.

Coal was among the first fossil fuels to be collected for producing energy or power. It lost favor when oil and gas were found to burn more cleanly. However, coal has once again become useful for generating power or providing heat or electricity. New technologies have reduced the harmful emissions that result from burning coal. Students on the campuses that use coal are concerned that the harm to the environment isn’t worth the cost savings of using a non-renewable resource. Furthermore, students are upset over the message that colleges are sending. As institutions of higher learning, colleges should be ashamed of campuses that operate coal plants. Coal, just like wood and other fossil fuels, is a limited resource. The over-use of coal, with its inevitable carbon dioxide emissions, is attributed to increasing the greenhouse affect. Keep an eye on how well students are doing in kicking coal off college campuses.

Students can make a difference on a global scale. Get involved in social change issues on your college campus and you’ll meet people, learn about change in a changing world and do something productive with the power you have.

Term papers for English as a Second Language (ESL) students can be extremely difficult. It is one thing to speak English but, as one of the most grammatically complex languages in the world, writing a term paper is another story. To have your term paper judged on the same level as someone that grew up reading, writing and speaking English is daunting. Paper Masters can show you how to make term paper writing easy if you are an ESL student.

The key to successful term paper writing for the ESL student is to get assistance. There are several ways to do this. You can obtain help from the writing lab at your university library. Writing labs contain student volunteers that are available every day to go over any writing assignment and point out the problems and concerns with it. This is a free service and a terrific value for the ESL student.

A better option in comparison with the writing lab is to have a professional term paper writer provide an example of exactly how your project should be done. This includes a grammatically correct version of a term paper on your specific topic, exactly how the professor assigned the paper to be done. The benefit to a professional doing a sample for you is that the format (MLA, APA, etc…) will be correct, wording and sentence structure will be on target, and all the information and resources required for your term paper will be provided for you. As you write your own paper, you can refer back to the model that the professional did and see how he would have conveyed an idea or how a citation is supposed to be formatted.

Term papers are very difficult for ESL students. Get help with yours and learn how to get an “A” on one of the most difficult aspects of college course work.

At Paper Masters, we constantly stress how important it is that your term paper topic be related to what is going on in the world today. No matter what class it is, a term paper topic should be relevant to today’s world in order to truly “Wow” your professor. Unfortunately, in the next few years, many college courses will examine the topic of the desperate state of the United States’ economy. Be prepared and take a look at the top 5 term paper topics on the economic crisis in America.

The number 5 term paper topic on the economy focuses on the credit crisis of the Fall of 2008. The credit crisis makes an excellent term paper topic because it is at the heart of America’s economic crisis. The credit crisis also covers several college class areas – economics, sociology and finance courses. Very close to the number 5 topic is the 4th term paper topic of the seizure of financial institutions by the federal government, namely the nation’s largest savings and loan and the nation’s largest insurance company. These also cover several important classes and the topic can be integrated into the same ones mentioned plus history course material.

The 3rd most popular term paper topic on the economy is the bailout plan. A bailout plan term paper examines whether or not the government’s decision to bailout AIG and other companies is a good idea. This topic can be integrated into political science, government, history, sociology and American studies term papers.

The 2nd term paper topic that has achieved recent popularity in light of the economic crisis is the topic of ethical business practices. The heart of the economic crisis in America today is a lack of ethics in business practices and government involvement in business. Ethics can be worked into just about any college course material.

The most popular term paper topic on the economy is the Global Financial Crisis. Taking America’s financial crisis and looking at in light of a global financial crisis is the most popular economics topic for term papers today. Integrate the global financial crisis into your term paper on history, sociology, anthropology or any other course and your professor will be impressed at your ability to look at his/her class from a more broad world view.

After every big election, professors love to assign voter turnout term papers. The demographics of election results tell quite a bit about our nation and a well-written voter turnout term paper can reveal interesting findings for political science term papers. Analysis of voter turnout is often based on ethnic, demographic, and economic statistics that are a viable measure of predicting who will show up at the polls and who will not; however, the reality still remains that when it comes to Americans and voting, there is an underlying sense of apathy that runs through the fabric of American culture that is at the root of low voter turnout. For example, one of our great American icons, Paris Hilton, campaigned for young, testosterone fueled men to get out and vote, as evidenced by the picture seen here. Sadly, Paris failed to vote for in the last Presidential election.

We are a nation of apathetic bitchers and hypocrites. Will this year be different, as our pocket-books are empty, our President is an idiot, our nation is scoffed at and we fight wars for made-up causes? As noted by Doyle (2001) in one voter turnout term paper, “At the most fundamental level, one can argue that U.S. voters don’t go to the polls often because the political parties and their allied economic interests have little incentive to promote citizen involvement, while at the same time there is no social or economic crisis strong enough to generate a sense of urgency in the electorate.”

The idea that there is no incentive to promote citizen involvement is quite apparent in our society. Many citizens are disengaging, not only from voting, but also from all kinds of civic involvement. While many voter turnout term papers argue that this is due to the politicians inability to motivate voters, many term paper say that the American citizen’s lack of participation in civic events may be due to broader cultural trends not directly related to politics. Americans in the 90’s have limited leisure time, have access to all kinds of services from the privacy of their home and rely primarily on television for information about the world. These trends tend to isolate people from one another and diminish our capacity to collectively address public problems through government action. The process of public policy-making on the local, state and national levels is left to an increasingly small group of active voters and leaders. While Americans continue to be involved in volunteer work and community building efforts, they are not active in civic networks, groups that try to connect them with elected leaders and government agencies. In the past three decades, active involvement in civic organizations has dropped. Americans still care about their communities, but they do not believe that politics and government matter. What will your voter turnout term paper say?

Every term paper must include facts to back up your thesis statements. However, since you are not an expert at the topic you are writing a term paper on, you must tell your professor where you took your facts from. This is done with in-text citation. In order to keep consistency at all colleges, universities and academic institutions that write term papers, the Modern Language Association (MLA)developed MLA format standards.

MLA format for term papers requires students cite information with the author’s last name and the page number of the book that the information was taken from within the text. An example would be as follows in parentheses (Smith, 29). At the end of the document, a bibliography or Works Cited list is added, which contains all the books used within the text for citation. The following is an example of an MLA bibliographic citation:

Smith, John. How the West Was Won in a Day. New York: Norton Publishing, 2005.

With this, the professor knows exactly what book, the author, and the edition of the book that you took the information from. It also protects you from being accused of stealing other people’s work or making up facts. While many students get frustrated with MLA format, it is a necessary and helpful part of writing term papers.

What’s the big deal? Term paper, research paper, a paper is a paper right? Absolutely Wrong…and your professor’s know the difference so you should too! A term paper is very different from a research paper and needs to be approached with a broad goal in mind. On the other hand, a research paper is a narrow endeavor that requires a focused approached. A definition of each will help elucidate the differences clearly.

Beginning with term paper – A term paper is exactly what the name states, a paper on a topic that you have studied over the “term” or the length of the semester. In a term paper, you will be writing about something that you have discussed at length in the class and is important to the overall course. The term paper must include as many concepts and ideas learned during the length of the course as possible. The goal of a term paper is to show the professor that you have a good, overall understanding of the ideas, concepts and topics discussed during the length of the course.

Now for a Research Paper – A research paper may or may not be on a topic you have covered druing the semester. The goal of a research paper is to learn more than what you have discussed or read in your coursework and do an in-depth analysis of a topic. Research papers show your professor what you are capable of adding to a topic beyond what he has taught you. You will use outside source material, draw insightful conclusions and illustrate a thorough understanding of one very narrowly defined issue or topic. The goal of a research paper is to show your professor you are an expert on a specific topic you learned about in class or a topic that is related to the coursework.

In summary, term papers are broad, all-encompassing papers on many issues covered during the “term” or the length of the course or semester. Term papers “brag” to the professor on how well you can integrate the many points of knowledge learned over the course and illustrate that you have a very good grasp of how the course work flows together. Research papers are meant to show your professor that you are an expert in one specific topic or concept discussed during the semester. They are narrow and contain original information from outside sources and material that goes beyond the scope of your course work.
