Jamey Rodemeyer and his “It Gets Better” Video

Lady Gaga, as the top grossing woman in the entertainment industry, is using her influence to drive the campaign for making bullying in schools illegal. An idea that is long overdue, Gaga’s efforts were amped up by the recent suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a young gay boy involved in the “It Gets Better” movement aimed at making the plight of bullied youth known. Lady Gaga has the attention of President Obama and now it rests on his lap to take her pleas and the concerns of Little Monster’s throughout the nation to capital hill.

The matter of bullying in schools is close and personal to Lady Gaga, a victim herself of torment in high school that she states “still hurts today”. When bullying occurs, students live in a climate of fear, intimidation, self-loathing and anger. Jamey Rodemeyer had told his parents and peers that the bullying did not affect him like it used to and that the “it gets better” campaign had helped him. However, the deep seeded depression that resulted of the taunting and abuse he received because of his homosexuality did not leave him. While he left no note, all that knew him were certain his death can be directly attributed to the bullying at school.

Serious, violent crime is reported to take place in 17% of all urban schools, 8% of rural schools and 5% of town schools, according to a study by the National Center for Education Statistics. Making bullying a hate crime is the goal of Lady Gaga and many others that feel the violent crime statistics would sky-rocket in schools if bullying were added to the list. Because children have the shelter of an inattentive school administration and the support of peer groups is no reason to allow a hate crime to take place. Criminalizing bullying would power to the schools and to the parents who feel just as helpless as their children sent into the gladiator pit every day they enter their school.

It’s an award winning game that is very popular with millions of gamers. However, the best gamers are also often college students that have to sacrifice time with games like Assassin’s Creed for classes and studying. the good news is that even the best students can find time in their busy schedule for great games like Assassin’s Creed!

The key to fitting such as intense hobby is time management. A college student’s interests are already incredibly diversified and their schedule tight. With classes, studying, research paper writing, working, sports, and socialization there isn’t much time for gaming. But with a little bit of organization and discipline most students can make enough time for their video games.

The first step of managing your time is to list responsibilities and activities you want to make time for. Next simply prioritize your list and get the most important thing completed. As strong as the desire is to make Assassin’s creed near the top, one knows it can’t be. Term papers and homework need to come first! As well as a job and other commitments. There is a huge advantage to your mental attitude when the day’s priorities are completed and out of the way. Guilt is no longer an issue and the experience is so much more enjoyable.

<g:plusone href="http://www.papermasters.com/blog/new-years-resolutions-student/" size="tall" count="false" ></g:plusone>
The new year provides students the opportunity to develop resolutions aimed at improving academic achievement. What New Year’s resolutions should the good student consider?

First, stop procrastinating! Too often, the allure of friends, parties, movies and even the good old television lures students away from their work. Even the students with the best intentions can fall into this trap. It’s easy to put off today what isn’t due until next week and chronic procrastination leads to sloppy, unfinished and rushed final products.

Second, keep a schedule! Effective time management is the first and best strategy for combating procrastination. That ten page term paper feels less taunting if you space it out two pages at a time over a series of weeks instead of trying to rush all ten pages in the night before it’s due. By developing a schedule and sticking to it, the good student can ensure proper study and homework time while also juggling other social commitments. Writing down projects, meetings and other plans will also reduce the likelihood of forgetting an important deadline.

Finally, a good student must remember to make healthful living a priority. Too often, students rely on caffeine, sugar and other unhealthy stimuli to keep up. Instead of relying upon temporary energy boosts followed by inevitable crashes, the good student will make smart dietary and other health decisions. Eat right, include vegetables in your diet and get a minimum of seven hours of sleep. These healthy choices will keep the body and mind strong, making study sessions more productive.

<g:plusone href="http://www.papermasters.com/blog/5-ipad-aps-college-students/" size="tall" count="false" ></g:plusone>
The iPad is simply a “must have” for college students. Don’t get me started on the many of uses of the iPad for college students, that’s a post for another day. Today, we will look at the great iPad apps that help with studying, organizing, entertaining and partying for the college student.

Evernote for College Classes

1. Evernote

Evernote is perfect for note taking in college courses. You can take the notes on your iPad and they are automatically synced with your online account, which gives you computer access to your notes. Likewise, take the notes on your computer and then study them on the go on your iPad. Ever note also organizes and makes your notes cohesive and manageable with just a bit of tweaking.

iStudiezPro organizes you

2. iStudiezPro

iStudiezPro is a fantastic organizer for college students. Color coding, subject headings, classwork organizer and due date planner are all part of an ap that fits the bill for an all encompassing tool. Reminders of when projects are due can be scheduled along with notifications in e-mail. The ap also summarizes your daily, weekly and semester projects, giving an idea of the status of each. iStudiezPro is perfect for college courses and keeping your research and writing assignments organized.

Flash My Brain Note Cards

3. Flash My Brain

Flash My Brain is an app that I use frequently, which tells you how easy it is to use! It is a note card making ap that stores your note cards online. You can also download other people’s note cards or make your own public. Cards can be organized into categories or color coded. The best part is that pictures can also be inserted into the note cards or you can take a picture on your iPhone and import it directly into your note cards.

iBooks - Made for College Students

4. iBooks

Of course, iBooks. The supplimental information that you can get from the thousands of books on iBooks is outstanding. While Apple is still working with academic publishing companies and universities to make the iPad standard fair for viewing textbooks, iBooks still has a vast amount of benefit for the college student. All the classics in literature are available for free as well as many discounted educational materials.

Rate My Professor

5. Rate My Professors

Great! Wondering what class to take and if a prof is good? This app is a must have for every college student. Don’t get stuck with a professor that is disliked, too difficult to understand or grades too hard. Over 1 million professors rated at over 6000 universities!

iSource APA formatting

6. iSource APA

Enough said…APA format is difficult. This app makes it simple with doing the citation for you. Just plug in the information and see how your bibliography should look.

iSource MLA

7. iSource MLA

Ditto…Great app and helps with beginning college students use of MLA format. Common for English 101 courses and freshman citation.

Gametender for College Students

8. Gametender iPad Edition

Always make sure you have something innovative to do at college parties. Gametender offers over 200 drinking games…part of any good college education.

I thought I’d heard it all but Riley gave me new insight into creative college dating secrets and here is how he did it!

Riley is actually kind of shy so I was surprised to hear this swanky approach but anyway, here is his 5 step approach, guaranteed (according to him otherwise he owes you a beer and I’ll give you his number) to get at least 1 out of 3 girls to say yes to a term paper date.

   1. Go to a place where hot brainy girls hang out. According to Riley, they don’t even have to be brainy, just speak English and have had English 101. This can be the library, student union, or even a bar but it has to be a relatively quiet place so they can hear your sigh, moans and groans.
2. Acquire a seat within 5 to 10 feet of them. Sometimes it helps to have a buddy along to support your story and make a harmless scene.
3. Once you have your seat, get out your phone, day planner, or whatever could look like something you keep yourself organized on. A piece of paper with the words “Term Paper Due Tomorrow” written on it will even suffice.
4. Begin the suffering. A good “Oh my God! I’m gonna loose the keys to the porche my rich parents bought me if I fail this term paper!” usually gets any woman’s attention (Ok…that one is too over the top but…) Just begin with some actions of utter panic, groan, put your hands in your hair, look around the room like someone just told you your dog died and you need a hug.
5. If she shows no interest in what horrible thing is happening to you, you should: a) consider moving on, she’s a cold bitch; b) sniffle a bit (now you’re the pathetic one but it works with some women); c) take to last and, according to Riley, sure-fire tactic – use the “I never” line. Simply wait 2 minutes to compose yourself, tap her on the shoulder and say, “Excuse me, I never do this but I’m in such a mess here, do you have any idea how to write a term paper on…”.

According to Riley, it works far better than hanging out in laundry mats or sending over beers in a crowded bar. Now Riley is 28 and doesn’t have a steady girlfriend at this time but…take it for what it’s worth, he swears by the “Term Paper! Help me! ” method!

The most critical skill in adapting to college life and the real world is the ability to manage time. It seems like there is an abundance of it until midterms come up and you realize that you’ve only read halfway through the first chapter of one text. College is far more academically intense than high school. Your high school teacher was probably satisfied if you stuck in a stray reference to the actual topic. College instructors, however, tend to pick your term paper apart and dissect it like a frog. Since academic excellence was the ostensive reason for going to college, you have to do your best to attain it. But this takes time, because every professor thinks her or his class is the most important, and assigns accordingly. Learn how to manage your time effectively with these simple suggestions.
On the other hand, many other aspects of college life require attention as well, and they are arguably about as important. If you’re paying for school with an athletic scholarship, for example, then that’s necessary too, and it takes up time. Friends, and late-night bull sessions aren’t the least bit important to your grades, but they are essential to your education. The key to success is not to sacrifice what you need psychologically for your immediate pressures. Get help with your coursework from tutors, writing labs term paper services , and study groups.
If you’re living at home, your parents will most likely help you (ahem!) budget your time. If you’re on-campus, the easiest way to manage time is to buy or make a schedule calendar and hang it on the wall next to your bed. Start off slowly with extra-curricular activities, say one — two at the most — and then block them out on the schedule in one color. Block out class time with another. Schedule one to two hours for every hour of instruction, and block that out in a third color. Block out between five and eight hours every day for sleep, and two and a half for meals. Everything else is your time. Enjoy it.
You might be able to do the same thing in you’re head if you’re too cheap to buy one, or too lazy to make your own. But just the activity of doing it will impress upon you what little time you actually have. If mom and dad aren’t managing your affairs and telling you when to do this or that, it will come in handy. Besides, after a couple of weeks, you’ll no longer have to look at the calendar. It’ll become second nature.

As convoluted, boring or ridiculous as it might seem at the time, it is imperative that you know all the ins and outs of the System, the sometimes nameless, faceless bureaucracy of the school administration. They almost have as much control over your destiny as you do, but they are nominally there to help. If you need money, for example, they can turn you on to student loans, scholarships, internships, and, on rare occasion, a halfway decent part-time job. Administration also provides for health care, should you break your arm in a pick-up croquet match, or come down with a severe case of depression.

There is a dark side to administration, however, and you would best be advised to appease it. Know what the schedules are for turning in financial aid requests, and payments. If you don’t pay in time, they’ll send a note to your professor ordering him or her not to let you into the classroom. Professors have rarely obeyed this, but that can change if money becomes tighter. Also, know exactly what the system’s academic requirements are, and plan your classes carefully. If you put all your eggs into one major, then decide to switch, you might be looking at an additional one or two years if you used up all your electives, or neglected your core classes in favor of your previous concentration.

Don’t let anything get in the way of goal of getting through college as painlessly as possible. Sometimes help is needed in coursework. Use the resources available to you. For example, pressure to complete projects when you are under financial strains can make working and concentrating impossible. Get help with your research papers and learn how to manage your time more effectively.

The degree and nature of change during your freshman year of college varies depending on the size of the college, its distance from parental units, and whether or not the student lives on-campus, off-campus, or at home. If you come from a large high school, then trot off to a private college that has 900 students or so, then you’ll have to adjust to a situation where everyone knows both you and your business. In that case, it’s best to learn the art of discretion. If you come from a small or moderate-size high school and go to Megastate University, with a student population of 50,000 or more, you’ll have to adjust to anonymity.

Although it is important despite the size of the school, it is especially critical for the students of large universities to learn how to network and build support systems. The stronger the support, the better your chances are for survival, not just during freshman year, but throughout your college career, and years after that. If you totally lack social skills, the best place to start is with your advisor, or favorite professor. Take advantage of their office hours. There are ten bizzilion campus organizations, one of them has to involve something you’re into, whether it’s a sport, artistic endeavor, politics, or Star Trek.

Students living at home still undergo changes, as increased demands are made on their time and attention. Hopefully, mom, dad or other family members will be around. High school buddies, especially those who went away to college, might drift away, however. If any of the above is important to you, it might be worth your while to keep in touch. Phone calls will do in a pinch, but they can get to be rather expensive. E-mailing is cheap and it does the trick, especially if you can add photos or live video and sound. If you really want to impress someone, however, remember this simple fact: everyone loves getting snail-mail.

Those students living in a dorm might find it difficult to adjust to a roommate. It’s one thing to have to share a bedroom with a younger sibling, but it’s another to do it with a complete stranger who might turn out to be your total opposite. It’s a good idea to spend some time getting to know each other, and negotiating the use of space. Hash out such issues as how clean the room should be, what music is acceptable after what hour, strategies for privacy, and so on. It’s also important to mark your space. A good way to do this is to decorate some aspect of the room with photographs of family and old friends. That serves the added purpose of cutting down homesickness.

Congratulations! Three months ago you suffered through the cap and gown ceremony, complete with 10,005 photographs with each and every family member. Now you have just completed freshman orientation. If you’re like many students, however, orientation can leave you with more questions and doubts than you started with. To your (*gasp*) horror, you realize that you have committed your life to academic pursuits, and wonder how you will survive it the first year, let alone the next four (five, six, or seven).

Actually, surviving freshman year isn’t that difficult, although that first year is key. There are as many guide books to freshman survival as you have relatives, and they contradict each other with the same degree of frequency. Then too, the advice they give doesn’t seem practical when pitted against that menacing presence known as “the real world.” A lot of them sound as if they were written by your parents, or other people who couldn’t remember their freshman year without rose-colored spectacles. That’s not to say that they’re wrong. Nevertheless, all the rules, strategies, “dos” and “don’ts,” and “helpful suggestions” can be better understood and interpreted through simplification. The surviving freshman needs only to master five basic principles: Change, The System, Resource Management, Time Management, and the Danger Zone. If you understand these, everything else more or less falls in line.

Study hard, keep in touch with folks, build a support system, be smart about your time and things, and minimize the urge to flirt with disaster. You would think that this is easy enough to do. Nevertheless, many people perish academically during that first year, and a tiny fraction does so literally. Perhaps I should simplify it even further: work hard, enjoy yourself, and don’t be so #$%@! stupid.

<g:plusone href="http://www.papermasters.com/blog/term-paper-all-nighters/" size="tall" count="false" ></g:plusone>
If you are a student, you have done an all-nighter! One of the most common all-nighters for the student is the dreaded term paper that was put off until the last minute. The all-nighter for a term paper is unavoidable sometimes but we have a few great tips to help you make the all-nighter go a little easier and faster!

OK, so you may not have prepared very well up to this point but before you begin writing your term paper, take a half an hour and get yourself ready for your all-nighter. Assuming it is a term paper you are doing, first begin by making your space comfortable. Include something enjoyable in your space, like put on your favorite XM radio station or put in a great CD to study to. Make sure the music is upbeat – Don’t put in downer tunes like Death Cab for Cutie’s new CD, far too depressing! Choose something like REM’s Accelerate – Fantastic, upbeat tunes to motivate your mind and keep you awake and focused.

Term Paper All-Nighter

Munchies and drink are vital to have for proper all night fuel. Stock up before you begin your term paper so that you don’t have to lose your train of thought when hunger strikes. There are many energy drinks out on the market that help boost you up with caffeine when its crunch time. Of course, they are not recommended for daily consumption but in a crunch and with a term paper due, you have to do what is necessary to perform.

Next, organize your research for your term paper in front of you. Have your source material and articles open on your computer, any book references beside you and class notes handy in case you need to refer to them for formatting or syllabus instructions. Plan at least 1 break every hour but make sure you don’t take more than 10 minutes for the break from your term paper. The break should include getting up and walking somewhere, even if its 5 feet across your dorm room, move your body!

Keep up-beat! Try not to worry about the time and know that if you do these steps, the term paper will turn out great because you are focused, prepared and ready to spend all night on it.
