5th Year of College Free! Well…Kind of…

Free College
According to the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, a recent trend in private universities is to offer a guarantee that if a student doesn’t graduate in 4 years, the 5th year is free! Pennsylvania’s Juniata College is one of several private schools to launch this program in hopes of attracting financially strapped parents. Since approximately only 1 in 3 college students actually graduate in 4 years, colleges like Juniata are hoping that parents will realize that two thirds of them will need to pay for an extra year they may not have budgeted for and be lured in by the 20% savings. Sound good parents? Well…wait just a minute…You have to have a bit of help from your college student…
According to the program at Juniata College, class choices are audited and students must stay on a rigid track of academics in order to fit their course work into 4 years. Instruction on making wise choices and handling larger course loads are given along with guidance on time management. The goal for the university is to make certain that each student makes it through their program in 4 years. By taking the pledge to participate in the program, the student is bound to certain course load requirements that guarantee the university will not have to pay for a 5th year.
This ridgid schedule benefits custom term paper companies, which thrive on students in a panic to get too much course work completed in too little time. Unrealistic expectations of universities under pressure to insure their students take large course loads leads to students having to cut corners in order to meet deadlines. Universities benefit from the promotional appeal of the pledge program while parents see savings in the 10’s of thousands of dollars when they do not have to pay for an additional year of school.
