Asteroids Term Paper

Looking at the night sky, one cannot help but wonder what an asteroid is. Although the name explicitly means “small planet” what designations delineate the asteroid from an actual planet? In addition to the fact that asteroids are rather enigmatic in their composition and characteristics, Freudenrich goes on to note that most of the asteroids that have been identified cannot even be accurately assessed in terms of weight. Because none of these bodies is large enough to permeate the atmosphere of either Mars or Jupiter, scientists have not been able to determine the relative mass of asteroids based on size and shape. Despite a lack of quantifiable information, scientists do speculate that Ceres—the largest known asteroid—weighs in excess of 2.6 trillion pounds or 1.2 x 1021 kg and the relative density of most asteroids is along the lines of 2 to 4 g/cm3, which is typical of rocky bodies!
