Asteroids Term Paper

Looking at the night sky, one cannot help but wonder what an asteroid is. Although the name explicitly means “small planet” what designations delineate the asteroid from an actual planet? A term paper on astorids discusses the difference between actual planets and asteroids - relative size. What is perhaps most interesting about asteroids is that while they have been acknowledged by modern science for more than 200 years, information available about them is relatively scant. Further, considering the fact that these rock prove to be such an omnipresent threat to the earth, it is surprising that more data has not been collected regarding these celestial bodies. Until the threat becomes pervasive, however, it is reasonable to assume that asteroids will remain a ubiquitous unknown.
Term Papers on Asteroids
Outside of size, shape and rotation, little else is known about asteroids. Therefore distinguishing them from planets is a matter of measuring relative size, shape and rotation.
In addition to the fact that asteroids are rather enigmatic in their composition and characteristics, Freudenrich goes on to note that most of the asteroids that have been identified cannot even be accurately assessed in terms of weight. Because none of these bodies is large enough to permeate the atmosphere of either Mars or Jupiter, scientists have not been able to determine the relative mass of asteroids based on size and shape. Despite a lack of quantifiable information, scientists do speculate that Ceres—the largest known asteroid—weighs in excess of 2.6 trillion pounds or 1.2 x 1021 kg and the relative density of most asteroids is along the lines of 2 to 4 g/cm3, which is typical of rocky bodies!
