Assessment Instruments of OCD

Assessment Instruments of OCD research papers report that there are many diagnostic tools that can be used in the assessment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in children and adults. Some of these assessment tools include self-report inventories and behavioral checklists that can be completed by parents. One of the oldest tests that assesses this disorder is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. This instrument is useful in that it also assesses other disorders. Therefore, it may be useful in ruling out other disorders that may explain the symptoms regarding the individual.

There are many other scales and instruments that attempt to measure the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. These include the Leyton’s Obsessional Inventory, the Children’s Version of the Leyton’s Obsessional Inventory, the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, and the Children’s Version of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Sale. Many of these instruments have been utilized in the current research that has been conducted with regard to obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Another instrument that has been recently developed is the Obsessive-Compulsive Drinking Scale. This measure is based upon the observance that many individuals with OCD often experience cravings for alcohol. Consequently, many individuals with OCD also have difficulties with controlling their consumptions of alcohol.

Although one of the requirements for the diagnosis of this disorder is that the individuals must have “insight” into the fact that the behaviors they are performing are abnormal, some patients have poor insight into explaining what their problems are. This is especially true with regard to children. Consequently, it may be critical in the proper diagnosis of children that parents be administered some type of assessment instrument.
