the artist and the woman research paperIn her Biography of Clara Schumann, The Artist and the Woman, Nancy Reich writes, “Her perseverance and stamina throughout the trials of these years are legendary.  That she was able to study and premiere works and maintain her position and popularity despite many tragedies was due to her talent, determination, and discipline, and in no small part to her father’s genius as a teacher and his obsession with her career; a debt she always acknowledged”.  It was her father, Friedrich Wieck, a music teacher and piano firm owner, who arranged her first program, and also he who instilled her with the concept of keeping the demands of the public in mind.  In the early half of the nineteenth century, it was common practice for a concert to consist of a group of “supporting” artists as well as a featured act.  Clara Schumann played a big role in dispelling that tradition, when after playing a series of solo concerts in Russia in 1844, she decided that she would go without the supporting artists and play alone on the bill.  In doing so, Clara followed the lead of Franz Liszt (who gave what is considered to be the first solo concert in London in 1940) and established herself as one of the trailblazers of live performance in the nineteenth century.  In the words of Nancy Reich,  “Clara Schumann’s life as a concert artist parallels the history of concert life in the nineteenth century.  A study of her long and illustrious career…gives us an intimate knowledge of programming traditions, repertoire, concert arrangements, customs in various cities, the child prodigy phenomenon, women in concert life, and changes in musical standards and taste.  In each of these spheres Clara Schumann had a decisive influence”.

The musical partnership of Robert and Clara Schumann is one of the most storied and productive in history, and bringing the works of Robert Schumann to European concert audiences is listed high on the list of her greatest accomplishments.  It is widely agreed that without her non-stop touring, during which she championed his music, it would have been many years before the works of Robert Schumann would have been played and accepted.  In fact, many renowned pianists began to play Robert Schumann compositions shortly after Clara introduced them.
