Afro-American studies, which is also referred to as African American studies, is an interdisciplinary field of research and writing that focuses on politics, cultures, and histories of African American people. San Francisco State formed the first Department of Black Studies, as it was called, in 1968 in response to a five-month protest from teachers and students.
