The late eighteenth century and nineteenth centuries in Europe were periods of immense social, political and economic change, change which brought with it sweeping innovations in the arts as well. The Romantic period, extending from the late 1700s to the beginnings of the twentieth century embraced these changes, and drew upon colonial and other exotic sources for inspiration. No region was of more fascination to Europe than Africa, especially Egypt and Nubia, and the art that was created of these regions embodied the concepts that Edward Said would discuss as Orientalism. The architecture of the Near East and Northeastern Africa in particular is of interest in the implications it had for the Romantic movement and European culture in general.
In 1798, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge published a book of poems called Lyrical Ballads, which attempted to embody the precepts of the new Romanticism. Wordsworth accompanied the second edition of this work with a Preface, which set down the concepts that were in their view the backbone of the Romantic view of art.
It should be said that the Romantic Movement was a reaction to the classical and somewhat emotionally sterile poems of Pope and Dryden. These authors were intellectuals who wrote highly literate mock epics or satires, which appealed to those with excellent educations and dry senses of humor. Wordsworth and Coleridge, on the other hand, felt that poetry should celebrate the individual, and the humbler, rustic person was a fit subject for the poem because he or she was closer to nature and less affected by the false nature of society. Nature was the great inspiration and spiritual mentor of the poet, and when communing with nature, he was able to resolve his problems and tap into all that was best and highest in his own spirit. Rather than dry intellect, the Romantics stressed the value of emotion and passion; the poet should attempt to reach a heightened state of feeling, then allow nature to soothe him so that he could then process his experience in “emotion recollected in tranquility”.
